TBBCA announces 2020 Business Impact Award Honoree BNY Mellon Wealth Management

Tampa, Fla. (May 19, 2019) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (“Tampa Bay BCA”) (“TBBCA”) is proud to announce BNY Mellon Wealth Management as the TBBCA 2020 Business Impact Award Honoree. TBBCA annual Impact Awards celebrate honorees for their extraordinary contributions to and in support of arts and culture.

“We are thrilled to recognize the engaged leadership of TBBCA Board Director Christopher Swink, who is BNY Mellon Wealth Management Senior Director, and the firm for their robust support of arts and culture in our community,” said Stephen Gay, TBBCA Board President and Co-Chair of Impact Awards. “BNY Mellon Wealth Management have demonstrated their strong belief in the importance of private sector financial and other contributions to ensure a healthy and thriving business and arts and cultural eco-system.”

“BNY Mellon Wealth Management is honored to be distinguished with the 2020 Impact Award,” said Christopher Swink. “I am proud of our firm’s strong and enduring commitment to making art central to our corporate identity, and to being proactively involved in art programs, sponsoring arts and cultural exhibitions, events and discussions around our art collection, especially here in Tampa Bay.”

Art and investment in culture are intertwined with BNY Mellon’s history and the firm’s connections with employees, clients, and community.  BNY Mellon’s corporate art collection spans four centuries of art and includes historic artifacts, British watercolors and drawings from the 18th to 20th centuries, 19th century American paintings, and contemporary art. The collection of artifacts that deal with the history of banking in the U.S. stretches back to the founding of The Bank of New York by Alexander Hamilton in 1784. That is joined by the rich heritage passed down from the Mellon family, who were legendary art collectors. Andrew Mellon served a long tenure as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. He later formed the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. His son, Paul Mellon, led the expansion of the National Gallery with the East Wing and was known as one of the greatest collectors of British art.

Brian Lang is the Curator of BNY Mellon’s corporate art collection. For over 20 years, Lang has managed the company’s worldwide art holdings, a diverse portfolio of works that he sees as a reflection of the vibrant, creative BNY Mellon organization. “I work closely with museums and other cultural institutions, consult with business teams including BNY Mellon Wealth Management, and develop innovative ways to link BNY Mellon’s rich heritage with a world of constant change,” remarked Lang.

“The BNY Mellon contemporary collection is our largest, and still growing. One of the aims is to support living artists at integral stages of their careers,” Lang explained. “Its major genres include printmaking, drawings and photography. Much of the art collection rotates between BNY Mellon’s clients offices around the globe. It is viewed as a cultural investment, enhancing the connections with clients and the employee experience with stimulating environments where innovation is fostered and arts and culture are valued.”

Since 1980, BNY Mellon has lent art from its collection to more than 100 exhibitions with public arts institutions. The art collection has partnered with Wealth Management for decades, and is a vital part of BNY Mellon’s support for museums and other cultural institutions.”

The most recent of these loans is to the Tampa Museum of Art for the exhibition “Frank Stella: Illustrations after El Lissitzky’s Had Gadya from the Collection of BNY Mellon.” Co-curated by Brian Lang and Joanna Robotham, the museum’s Curator for Modern and Contemporary Art, the exhibition debuts to the public June 1st, 2020. Frank Stella is recognized as one of the greatest living American artists. “The exhibition on loan from the BNY Mellon collection is very special,” said Lang. “It will feature the complete portfolio of Stella’s twelve prints, each unique in technique and color.”

10 Reasons to Support the Arts in 2020

The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, goodness, and beauty. The arts bring us joy, help us express our values, and build bridges between cultures. The arts also are a fundamental component of a healthy community—strengthening them socially, educationally, and economically—benefits that persist even in difficult social and economic times.

    1. Arts unify communities. 72% of Americans believe “the arts unify our communities regardless of age, race, and ethnicity” and 73% agree that the arts “helps me understand other cultures better”—a perspective observed across all demographic and economic categories.
    2. Arts improve individual well-being. 81% of the population says the arts are a “positive experience in a troubled world,” 69% of the population believe the arts “lift me up beyond everyday experiences,” and 73% feel the arts give them “pure pleasure to experience and participate in.”
    3. Arts improve academic performance. Students engaged in arts learning have higher GPAs, standardized test scores, and college-going rates as well as lower drop-out rates. These academic benefits are reaped by students regardless of socio-economic status. Yet, the Department of Education reports that access to arts education for students of color is significantly lower than for their white peers. 91% of Americans believe that arts are part of a well-rounded K-12 education.
    4. Arts strengthen the economy. The production of all arts and cultural goods in the U.S. (e.g., nonprofit, commercial, education) added $877.8 billion to the economy in 2017, including a $29.7 billion international trade surplus—a larger share of the nation’s economy (4.5%) than transportation, tourism, and agriculture (U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis). The nonprofit arts industry alone generates $166.3 billion in economic activity annually—spending by organizations and their audiences—which supports 4.6 million jobs and generates $27.5 billion in government revenue.
    5. Arts drive tourism and revenue to local businesses. Attendees at nonprofit arts events spend $31.47 per person, per event, beyond the cost of admission on items such as meals, parking, and babysitters—valuable commerce for local businesses. 34% of attendees live outside the county in which the arts event takes place; they average $47.57 in event-related spending. Arts travelers are ideal tourists, staying longer and spending more to seek out authentic cultural experiences.
    6. Arts spark creativity and innovation. Creativity is among the top five applied skills sought by business leaders, per the Conference Board’s Ready to Innovate report—with 72% saying creativity is of high importance when hiring. Research on creativity shows that Nobel laureates in the sciences are 17 times more likely to be actively engaged in the arts than other scientists.
    7. Arts drive the creative industries. The Creative Industries are arts businesses that range from nonprofit museums, symphonies, and theaters to for-profit film, architecture, and design companies. A 2017 analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 673,656 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation or distribution of the arts—4.01% of all businesses and 2.04% of all employees. (Get a free local Creative Industry report for your community here.)
    8. Arts have social impact. University of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement, more social cohesion, higher child welfare, and lower poverty rates.
    9. Arts improve healthcare. Nearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients, families, and even staff. 78% deliver these programs because of their healing benefits to patients—shorter hospital stays, better pain management, and less medication.
    10. Arts for the health and well-being of our military. The arts heal the mental, physical, and moral injuries of war for military servicemembers and Veterans, who rank the creative arts therapies in the top four (out of 40) interventions and treatments. Across the military continuum, the arts promote resilience during pre-deployment, deployment, and the reintegration of military servicemembers, Veterans, their families, and caregivers into communities.

CALL TO ARTISTS for Heights Unites Music & Arts Festival

Heights Unites Music & Arts Festival Returns February 22, 2020

Tampa, FL – The Heights Unites Music & Arts Festival is making a return to Seminole Heights on February 22, 2020. The event, which have proven to be a successful collaboration between the South Seminole Heights Civic Association (SSHCA) and Brew Bus Brewing, will welcome 13 local and regional bands to perform throughout the day on an outdoor stage and more intimate indoor stage. Additionally, 25 specially selected artists, showcasing a variety of mediums, will be invited to exhibit and sell their work to the expected audience of over 1,500. Contact: Stephen Lytle Phone: 813-403-9236 Email: Info@sshca.org
Heights Unites, as it’s often called, started 3 years ago after the local neighborhood association realized there was a need to bring together and unite the community after tragic events struck the area. The event has now grown into much more than that, raising funds to support community improvement projects in South Seminole Heights and funding a commitment by both Brew Bus and the SSHCA to endow a $25k scholarship fund that would pay out annually to a Hillsborough High School student attending USF. In total the event has raised nearly $20k towards those efforts and the organizers hope to double that number this year.
“Heights Unites has always been about bringing out community together for good,” said Stephen Lytle, SSHCA President, “Now it is one of the most anticipated events in the community each year and it’s great to see everyone having so much fun and helping great causes.”
Each year Heights Unites strives to provide an artistic element to the event that involves those attending. The initial year featured a live mural painting of “Heights Unites” and last year there were interactive art installations attendees could contribute to. This year, festival goers will help select 9 designs that will be added to the Seminole Heights Street Art Trail. The project, a pilot program last year, commissions artists to repurpose stormwater inlets in the community into art installations. There is currently a call for artists to submit designs and those selected at the event will receive $850 for their work. There is a separate call for artists for their annual poster competition in which the selected winner will receive $500 and premier exhibitor space at the event.
For their commitment to the arts and focus on community building the SSHCA has been awarded the Hillsborough County Neighborhood Arts Award in 2017 and 2018 and was awarded “Most Effective Neighborhood Board” by the county in 2019. Similarly, Brew Bus Brewing was awarded the “Best Community Partnership” award in 2019.
It’s clear that the partnership has made a positive impact on the local community and will continue to do so for years to come. This year’s event will take place during the day and into the evening on February 22, 2020 at Brew Bus Brewing in Seminole Heights.
