  • TBBCA Announces Distinguished Judges for 2017 Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships Program

    Experts will select recipients in six categories of scholarships to help fund their higher education in the arts

    TAMPA, Fla. (March 27, 2017) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts (TBBCA) is pleased to introduce its 2017 Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships Program Judges. For each category to which high school juniors and seniors from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties have applied, the judges who bring their unique expertise are: Joanna Robotham, Visual Arts; Lisa Unger, Literary Arts; Eugenie Bondurant, Theatre; Dawne Eubanks, Vocal Music; Paul Wilborn, Instrumental Music; and Helen Hansen French, Dance.

    “TBBCA thanks our judges who are each extremely knowledgeable in their field, for volunteering to adjudicate applications submitted by a highly competitive talent pool of high school juniors and seniors from across the Tampa Bay area,” said Susana Weymouth, TBBCA’s executive director. “These judges play an important role in helping TBBCA to continue to support and promote arts education in the Tampa Bay area through this scholarship program founded by TBBCA Past President, the late Charlie Hounchell, and named in his honor.”

    TBBCA Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships provide valuable funding resources to some of the most talented students in the nation, helping defray their tuition expenses at the college, university, conservatory or professional arts training program of their choice. Since 2008, TBBCA has awarded 55 scholarships, all but 9 to students from public high schools. The 2017 CHASS winners will be announced in early April and an awards ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 17h at TBBCA Cultural pARTner The Tampa Museum of Art. The public are invited to attend.

    Visual Arts Judge Joanna Robotham joined the staff of the Tampa Museum of Art as the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2016. She previously held the Neubauer Family Foundation Assistant Curator position at the Jewish Museum in New York City where she worked for over 10 years. Ms. Robotham is the curator of the Museum’s current exhibition, Alex Katz: Black and White. At the Jewish Museum, she was the curator of Becoming Jewish: Warhol’s Liz and Marilyn (2015) and organized the exhibition Masterpieces & Curiosities: Nicole Eisenman’s Seder (2015). In 2014, she worked with Jens Hoffmann, Deputy Director, on Other Primary Structures, a large-scale sculpture show that revisited The Jewish Museum’s seminal 1966 exhibition of minimalist art, Primary Structures: Younger American and British Sculptors. Past projects include Dani Gal: As from Afar (2014), Jack Goldstein x 10,000 (2013) and Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World) (2011). She received her M.A. in Curatorial Studies from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and earned a B.A. in Art History and Political Science from the University of Washington.

    Literary Arts Judge Lisa Unger is the New York Times and internationally bestselling, award-winning author of fifteen novels, including THE RED HUNTER (April 2017) and INK AND BONE (2016 Goodreads Choice Award Finalist.) Her books are published in twenty-six languages worldwide, have sold millions of copies and have been named “Best of the Year” or top picks by the Today show, Good Morning America, Entertainment Weekly, Amazon.com, Independent Booksellers, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and the Sun Sentinel to name a few. Unger’s essays have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, NPR and Travel+Leisure Magazine. It’s hard to compare Lisa Unger to any of her contemporaries. Unique, inventive, and often experimental, her writing is impossible to categorize. She combines her extensive knowledge of the human psyche with an understanding of trauma and fear to create novels that have earned her a reputation as one of the most skilled practitioners of the psychological thriller around today. Throughout her career, she has deftly walked the fine line between literary novels and commercial thrillers all the while hitting The New York Times bestseller lists and earning both critical acclaim and millions of fans worldwide. Lisa Unger lives in the Tampa Bay area of Florida with her husband, daughter and labradoodle.

    Theatre Judge – Eugenie Bondurant’s long and slightly strange career has taken her from the runways of New York and Paris to a featured role as “Tigris” in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. At 6’-1”, with knife-blade cheekbones, Bondurant, was “discovered” after a bout with cancer left her looking especially exotic and androgynous. She was soon a working model in the U.S. and Europe. A modeling trip to Los Angeles led to an acting career. She created a string of characters in TV and film – including Fight Club (with Ed Norton); Saturday Night Live (with Madonna and Mike Myers); as Alice Cooper’s favorite Dominatrix on the TV series Something Wilder (with comedian Gene Wilder); on HBO’s Arliss; in the indie feature, Donald and Dot Clock; in NCIS: New Orleans, and many others. When The Hunger Games’ director, Francis Lawrence, went looking for an actor to play Tigris, a pivotal character enhanced to be both female and feline, a nationwide search led them to Bondurant. She is also a cabaret singer, appearing in the American Songbook Series with Paul Wilborn and Blue Roses and a founder of The Radio Theater Project. A well-known on-camera acting coach, Bondurant, is a staff member at the prestigious Patel Conservatory in Tampa.

    Vocal Music Judge Dawne Wisner Eubanks holds a BA Degree in Vocal Music from Florida State University, and currently teaches voice at Eckerd College and the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School. Her solo career has led her to the stages of Carnegie Hall, Dallas’ Meyerson Symphony Center, and locally, the Mahaffey Theatre, Ruth Eckerd Hall, and the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. She has sung roles with the Florida Opera Company, Florida Opera West, Inc., Royalty Theatre Company, St. Pete City Theatre, and has been a featured guest soloist with The Florida Orchestra, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Florida Orchestra Master Chorale, and the Turtle Creek Chorale. Recent performances include the soprano solos in Haydn’s “Lord Nelson Mass”, and “Creation”, Mozart’s “Exsultate Jubilate”, Handel’s “Messiah”, Bach’s “Magnificat”, and Mozart’s “Coronation Mass”, all with members of The Florida Orchestra. Dawne maintains a private vocal studio in St. Petersburg, is an active recitalist, and is Music and Worship Leader at the First Baptist Church of St. Pete, in addition to being a sought after vocal coach and adjudicator for competitions and festivals in voice, choral music, musical theatre, and piano.

    Instrumental Music Judge Paul Wilborn is the Executive Director of the Palladium Theater at St. Petersburg College. Under his leadership the Palladium has won numerous “Best of the Bay” awards and is recognized as the top venue for jazz, blues, choral music, chamber music and dance in the bay area. Paul is a pianist, musician and bandleader. His American Songbook Series presents intimate cabaret shows at American Stage Theater and other venues around Florida. As founder and leader of Paul Wilborn and the Pop Tarts, he played most major venues in the Tampa Bay area for 15 years. He is a founding member of the WMNF and Studio at 620 Radio Theater Project and contributes radio plays to the project. Paul serves as an adjudicator to a number of music competitions.

    Prior to joining the Palladium, Wilborn worked for Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio as Manager of Creative Industries. Major accomplishments included increasing community support for artists and arts organizations, connecting the arts and the economic development communities, and directing Arte 2007, Tampa Bay’s Festival of Latin American Arts. Before joining the city, Wilborn was an award-winning reporter and columnist for the Tampa Tribune, the St. Petersburg Times and the Associated Press in Los Angeles. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Times’ Editorial Board for two years. He is a graduate of the University of South Florida and a Tampa native.

    Dance Judge Helen Hansen French is a native of St. Petersburg, Florida. She received her BFA from The Juilliard School in 2001. In addition to BDT’s annual New York City seasons she has toured nationally and internationally performing in such venues as, the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Chautauqua Dance Festival, Vail International Dance Festival, Rishon LeZion International Festival in Israel, and the Oriente Occidente Festival in Rovereto, Italy. Mrs. French has been instrumental in staging BDT’s works at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Pieve International School in Italy, North Carolina Dance Theater, and numerous colleges and universities through out the United States. In addition to working with BDT Mrs. French is also a member of Karen Reedy Dance and has had the pleasure of performing with Nilas Martins’ Dance Company, participating in a residency at White Oak Dance working with choreographer Adam Hougland, and performing in the Guggenheim’s Works/Process program with Brian Reeder and Pam Tanowitz. As a choreographer/movement maker Mrs. French focuses on collaborations and exploring the relationship between dance and other art forms. In support of these endeavours she has been awarded a 2015 and 2016 Individual Artist Grant from the City of St. Petersburg and she is also a 2016 Creative Pinellas Artist Fellow. Her work has been shown at The Peter Jay Sharp Theater, Clark Studio Theater, Kaatsbaan, Studio@620, The Palladium and St. Petersburg College.
    Helen is deeply committed to arts education and developing the next generation of artists as well as contributing to the community in which she lives. She is a founding member of the St. Petersburg Dance Alliance, www.spdancealliance.com, and co-producer of Beacon: a performance series for St. Pete. In addition to teaching dance to all ages Mrs. French is also a certified Alexander Technique teacher. She has served on the dance faculties at George Mason University, The Juilliard School, Flint Hill School (VA), the Neighborhood Playhouse (NYC), John Hopkins Middle School and St. Petersburg College.

    TAMPA, Fla. (March 2, 2017) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) is pARTnering with the 47th Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, for another exciting TBBCA Chalk Walk Saturday, March 4th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday March 5th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., under the eaves of the Tampa Museum of Art, alongside the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts in Curtis Hixon Park. Ten commissioned chalk artists will create live interactive art to the theme of “Sports Heroes”, echoing current TMA exhibit “Who Shot Sports”.

    “We are proud to offer this TBBCA Chalk Walk once again in downtown Tampa with our valued pARTner Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts,” says Susana Weymouth, Executive Director of TBBCA. “It is a great opportunity to support talented artists of this genre and technical skill while providing a free, fun, family-friendly and accessible program for all ages and levels of art appreciation.   • Jennifer Kosharek wins TBBCA Call to Artists 2017 Gasparilla Music Festival Poster Contest

    Jennifer Kosharek announced winner of 2017 Gasparilla Music Festival Poster Contest sponsored by Hill Ward Henderson in partnership with Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts

    TAMPA, Fla. (February 28, 2017) The 6th annual Gasparilla Music Festival (GMF) Poster Contest winner Jennifer Kosharek’s original artwork will be unveiled at GMF’s Soundcheck Party Wednesday, February 1st, 2017. Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) issued the Call to Artists and organized the contest, which was presented by Hill Ward Henderson. Artists from throughout the greater Tampa Bay area submitted original works of art to TBBCA. Judges Sarah Howard, USF IRA Curator for Public Art and Social Practice, Ya La’Ford, artist/educator, and the GMF Poster Committee evaluated dozens of submissions based on concept, originality, and how well they incorporated GMF and Tampa Bay’s wide diversity of culture into its design adaptability. Jennifer Kosharek’s selected winning entry will be recognized as the Official Commemorative Poster of the 2017 Gasparilla Music Festival that will take place in Curtis Hixon Riverfront Park and Kiley Gardens Park on March 11th & 12th. Meet the artist and have your poster signed at the festival 2:00 – 3:00 PM at the Kiley Garden merchandise tent.

    Jennifer Kosharek is a professional curator, painter, street artist and rag doll maker. She has shown locally and internationally for the past eight years, and her artwork is held in museum archives and collections around the world, including the Smithsonian and the Museums of Modern Art in NY, Wales and Brazil. Kosharek focuses artistically on bright, cheery images that promote the whimsical side of life.

    Kosharek reacted to being chosen as the winner, “I really appreciated the call for art to include Tampa culture, music, a positive outlook and a multicultural flair…I hope my poster inspires people to enjoy the music!” Kosharek’s sixteen year old son loves Cage the Elephant so she “included notes from one of their songs ‘playing’ on the river in the painting, together with the Tampa skyline, a vase image from Ybor’s Columbia Restaurant and a trumpet for the jazz influence at the festival”.

    As winning artist, Kosharek will receive a $500 cash award and VIP ticket packages to GMF 2017, and her bio will be featured in the GMF program and on GMF social media sites. There will also be a featured poster-signing session at the festival. A special ‘Young Emerging Artist Prize’ sponsored by TBBCA Executive Director Susana Weymouth will be awarded to 14 year old Grace Gayle. The Coleman Middle School student will receive a $100 check and further recognition at the GMF Soundcheck Party. Other selected finalists will be present and their artworks auctioned at the GMF VIP event, with proceeds split 50% to the artist and 50% to benefit Gasparilla Music Foundation arts education and Recycled Tunes program.

    Kosharek’s art is currently on exhibit as part of TBBCA Art in Lobbies Program at TBBCA pARTner Vantage Point Advisors of Raymond James, TBBCA Board President Damien Bertucelli offices, downtown Tampa.

    TBBCA appoints executive officers, adds four leaders to its Board of Directors
    New Directors bring business expertise and passion for arts and culture to the Board

    TAMPA, Fla. (January 5, 2017) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) is pleased to announce the Board of Directors’ 2017 Board of Directors Officers and the election of four new Directors.

    Damien Bertucelli, Vantage Point Advisors of Raymond James, will serve as the 2017 President of TBBCA Board of Directors. Stephen Gay, of Gay & Associates with Smith & Associates, is Vice-President; Sharon Britton, attorney at Phelps Dunbar, is Secretary; and Lisa Carver, CFO of The Wilson Company, is Treasurer.

    TBBCA elected new Board Directors: Christopher Cavaliere, attorney with Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick; Nicole Duga, attorney with Hill Ward Henderson; Victor Langford, founder & CEO of Ya La’ford International; and advertising executive Adam Unger.

    Each Director brings diverse experience and expertise to TBBCA, a non-profit organization that has united Tampa Bay area businesses to champion arts and culture for a prosperous community over the past 27 years. Directors serve a three-year term.

    Christopher Cavaliere, associate with Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, is a commercial litigator representing international corporations, large and small businesses, and insurers in all aspects of their business and in a variety of legal disputes. Cavaliere began his legal career as a criminal prosecutor. He is a graduate of Stetson University and Stetson Law, where he was awarded for excellence in trial advocacy, served as a Senior Associate on the Stetson Law Review, and interned for the Honorable Susan C. Bucklew, Senior U.S. District Court Judge. Cavaliere is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His professional affiliations include the American Bar Association, The Florida Bar, Hillsborough County and St. Petersburg Bar Associations. Cavaliere is a cultural enthusiast, with special interest in the visual and performing arts.

    Nicole Duga is an associate in Hill Ward Henderson’s Litigation Group. Her practice includes the defense of product liability and tort claims, along with a diverse array of construction and design claims and employment and labor law claims. Duga graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Florida Levin College of Law where she served as an Articles Editor for the Florida Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif for her scholastic achievements. Duga’s artistic passions include dance and music.

    Victor Langford is the Founder & CEO of Ya La’ford International, a visual and experiential based art practice. He has held positions specializing in government, regulatory, business, public affairs and real estate facilitation, including as Advisor to the Secretary, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; and Lead Legislative Analyst, U.S. Office of Congressional Relations, Office of Personnel Management, D.C. A graduate of Hampton University, he has trained at Stanford University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Regent University. Affiliations include National Endowment for the Arts, Americans for the Arts, and AffectArt Worldwide Artists Association.

    Adam Unger has over 15 years of experience as a business executive within the advertising industry. He has guided both creative strategy and business development while serving as a liaison between clients and the agency’s art direction and copywriting teams in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. Unger has first-hand knowledge of and is a strong advocate for a thriving arts scene and its impact on the business community. He and his husband recently transferred to the Tampa Bay area from Washington, D.C., where they were active supporters of arts and culture, including Studio Theatre and the Washington Project for the Arts. Unger’s artistic interests include film, literature, visual and performing arts.

The contest is presented by Hill Ward Henderson in pARTnership with Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts and the Gasparilla Music Foundation. The submission receipt deadline is 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 3, 2017. All artists interested in participating are requested to register their intent to submit prior to January 2, 2017 by sending an email to susanaweymouth@tbbca.org

    GMF 2017 will take place in downtown Tampa on March 11th & 12th and will feature musical acts from a wide variety of genres on several stages and cuisine from the region’s top restaurants. The poster design should be an artistic representation of GMF. Artists are encouraged to incorporate Tampa Bay’s wide diversity of culture into its design; however, artists are discouraged from using “Gasparilla” themes such as pirates or beads. Please do NOT include the GMF name or logo in the artwork; doing so will disqualify the entry. If chosen, GMF branding will be incorporated to the final poster version by GMF.

    Entries will be judged by an expert panel of judges and the GMF Poster Committee. GMF will make the final decision to select the winning entry. Submissions will be evaluated based on concept, originality, lay out and marketing adaptability.
    The winning poster design will be announced at the GMF VIP Sound Check party (date TBD) and will be recognized as the Official Commemorative Poster of the 2017 Gasparilla Music Festival.
    The winning artist will receive:
    • A $500 cash award
    • Two (2) VIP tickets to GMF 2017, valid for both days of the festival ($300 value).

    The Tampa Innovation Alliance is sparking a technology, healthcare, education and entertainment renaissance in the 19-square miles of North Tampa – bounded by Busch Boulevard to the south, Bearss Avenue to the north, and interstates 75 and 275 to the east and west.

    Working with creative agency ChappellRoberts, the Alliance will rebrand this district as a launch pad for transformation and a place where human potential is unleashed.

    On behalf of TBBCA pARTner the Tampa Innovation Alliance, we invite you to submit for potential selection to be one of four (4) artists to help reveal the District’s four brand traits through live painting/drawing during the organization’s annual Innovation Gathering.

    Each artist will creatively interpret one brand trait on an 8-foot surface (final material TBD) during the 2-hour span of the event.

    Given the scale of the work, artists will be able to begin working on their piece with the material ahead of time, but must allow for final live completion of the artwork during the event.

    Event Details Innovation Gathering at University Mall – West End Wednesday, Oct. 26 6:30 to 9 p.m.

    The event will be well-attended by large and small businesses alike, including representatives from the Alliance’s five anchors – Busch Gardens, Florida Hospital, Moffitt Cancer Center, University Mall and the University of South Florida.

    Requirements:
    Portfolio Submissions due: 10/15/2016
    Artists must be able to commit to the following:
    • Arrive to the Gathering event by 5:30 p.m. to set up and stay until the event concludes (as late as 9:30 p.m.)
    • Preparation/work on the mural ahead of the event as needed to ensure live completion during the event
    • The work produced must be completed live within the 2-hour timeframe of the event
    • Paints, brushes and a large-format surface will be supplied

(October 5, 2016) – Tampa Bay BCA (TBBCA) will recognize businesses and individuals for their extraordinary contributions to arts and culture in the Tampa Bay area on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016 at the annual TBBCA Impact Awards. This year’s Honorees are internationally renowned artist Janet Echelman; Mark T. Mahaffey, Chairman of the Board at The Mahaffey Company; Smith & Associates and the company’s President and CEO Robert “Bob” Glaser; and Dr. Kent Lydecker, former Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg.

    Honoree Janet Echelman is a Tampa native and an internationally award-winning artist who creates monumental aerial sculptures that transform with wind and light. Echelman combines ancient craft with cutting-edge technology to create artworks that have become focal points in over 37 cities on four continents.
    Echelman has received numerous honors, including a Rotary Scholarship, Guggenheim Fellowship, the Harvard University Loeb Fellowship, a Fulbright Lectureship, Aspen Institute Crown Fellowship, and the Smithsonian’s American Ingenuity Award recognizing her as one of “the greatest innovators in America today.” Echelman’s 2011 TED talk “Taking Imagination Seriously” has more than 1.5 million views and has been translated into 34 languages.
    TBBCA is honoring Mark T. Mahaffey with the Patron of Culture & the Arts Impact Award. In the 1980s, Mark and his wife Marianne Mahaffey, and his parents, Tom and Jane Mahaffey, donated $1 million toward the renovation of what was then known as the Bayfront Center entertainment complex, renamed for his family the Mahaffey Theater. Mark and Marianne Mahaffey are known for their philanthropy and passion for arts and culture.
    Mahaffey is the chairman of the board at The Mahaffey Company, a family business that develops, builds, owns and manages rental apartment communities in Central and west-central Florida. He is the chair of the Board of Trustees for The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, a director at Sabal Trust Company and Sabal Investment Management Company, and a board trustee of Elon University. He also serves on the boards of All Children’s Hospital, the St. Petersburg Environmental Commission, the St. Petersburg Festival of States, and St. Leo University.
    This year TBBCA is recognizing Smith & Associates Real Estate with the Business Impact Award. The company’s President and CEO Robert “Bob” Glaser has created a corporate culture amongst his over 225 agents, so that with success in turn Smith & Associates generously gives back to the community.
    Glaser participates in over 50 organizations throughout Tampa Bay, including on numerous fundraising and non-profit boards. His long history of service and deep commitment to artists, and arts and cultural organizations, includes as Chair of the Morean Arts Center/Chihuly Collection, and on the boards of the Tampa Theatre, Florida Aquarium, Palladium Theatre and the Blue Ocean Film Festival, among others.
    The Individual Impact Award will be presented to Dr. Kent Lydecker. He served as Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, from 2010 to 2016. While at the MFA, Lydecker addressed the complex operational requirements of the MFA’s programs, building, and activities. He brought important exhibitions to Tampa Bay, established and expanded connections with key constituencies, encouraged robust public programs, especially services for families and schools, and grew the MFA’s extraordinary collection, now standing at some 20,000 works of art in all media from across the globe and all of history.
    Lydecker previously served as the Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Associate Director for Education of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where over a period of nearly 20 years he sustained excellence in museum teaching at all levels, built a team of award-winning publication and media professionals, pioneered uses of new technology in support of the museum’s mission, and led the reconstruction of the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education.
    TBBCA will recognize the four Impact Awards honorees on Thursday, Oct. 20. The evening begins with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. at the Dalí Museum, 1 Dalí Blvd., St. Petersburg, and continues with dinner and the awards program at 7:30 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theater, 400 1st St. S., St. Petersburg.     The Tampa Bay BCA (TBBCA) and pARTner St. Petersburg Arts Alliance are thrilled to bring TBBCA Chalk Walk to the SPFestival -SPF16 in St. Petersburg on Saturday, September 24 from 10 -5 p.m. in South Straub Park along Beach Drive.

    TBBCA Chalk Walk celebrates and supports the creations of artists in chalk to the theme of “Bringing Your Favorite Book Character to Life.” An interactive art experience for all ages and levels of art appreciation, TBBCA Chalk Walk offers the opportunity to interact with the artists and see the complex stages of their work.
