  • TBBCA Announces New Emergency Fund for Jazz Instrumentalists and Vocalists

    Tampa, FL (July 8, 2015) Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) welcomes qualified applicants to be considered for a newly established “Emergency Fund for Jazz Instrumentalists and Vocalists”. This TBBCA Program is made possible by a Tampa Bay philanthropist with deep ties in the jazz community and who prefers to remain anonymous.

    Applicants must demonstrate urgent need for emergency funds due to non-terminal illness or other unexpected at-risk situations. Funds are to be strictly applied to mortgage/rent, air conditioning, heat, and electricity. Proof of use of funds for payment is required.  Application form can be found online at http://www.tbbca.org/programs-events/emergency-fund/   Required documentation is listed under eligibility criteria. Applications with accompanying attachments should be submitted BY MAIL ONLY to TBBCA P.O. Box 559, Tampa, FL  33601 Attn: Executive Director. Funding of awards is at the discretion of TBBCA. Funds are dispensed on a case by case basis.

    Donations to the Fund are welcomed and can be mailed to P.O. Box 559, Tampa, FL  33601. TBBCA is a non-profit 501(c) (3).

  • TBBCA and pARTner HYDE PARK VILLAGE CO-HOST ART IS GOOD CULTURAL ENCOUNTER, TBBCA ANNOUNCES IMPACT AWARDS 2015 PATRON OF CULTURE & THE ARTS HONOREE, RICHARD GONZMART

    (TAMPA, FL; JUNE 11, 2015) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts (TBBCA) and pARTner Hyde Park Village are hosting Art is Good Cultural Encounter on Thursday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Piquant Epicure & Cuisine in the Village, 1633 W. Snow Avenue, Tampa, 33606. The event will announce and introduce local Tampa restaurateur and philanthropist, Richard Gonzmart, as the TBBCA Impact Awards 2015 “Patron of Culture & the Arts” Honoree. The event is free and open to the public.

Through pARTner TBBCA, and through art, we are able to connect with the Tampa Bay community, and recognize patrons of the arts, like Richard Gonzmart, who hold the history of Tampa in such high regard,” says Susan Martin, General Manager of Hyde Park Village.

    Art is Good Cultural Encounter will showcase Hyde Park Village and Art Production Fund’s Public Art Initiative by installing banners by artist, Deborah Kass. Tampa Bay area winning artists selected by judges from TBBCA “Call to Artists” will be at the event, presenting their original artwork inspired by the work of Deborah Kass.

    Deborah Kass employs the visual motifs of post-war painting to explore the intersection of politics, popular culture, art history and personal identity. Her work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Solomon Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Fine Art, Boston; The National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C. and numerous public and private collections.

    The emcee for the event, who will also emcee TBBCA Impact Awards gala, October 22, 2015, is WTVT-TV FOX Good Day Tampa Bay Anchor, Russell Rhodes.

  • Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts Awards Six Tampa Bay Area Students The Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships

    Tampa, Fla. (April 28, 2014) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) is proud to announce the selection of six Tampa Bay area high school students to receive The Charlie Hounchell Art Stars fine and performing arts scholarships. This TBBCA program is named in honor of TBBCA Past President, the late Charlie Hounchell, who was the program’s founder and champion. Since 2007, TBBCA has awarded $122,500 to some of the most promising and talented young artists and performers in the nation, providing financial assistance for higher education tuition to 49 Tampa Bay area students.

    TBBCA awards six (6) scholarships in the amount of $2,500, one in each of six fine and performing arts categories: dance, instrumental music, literary arts, theatre, visual arts and vocal music. This year a deep talent pool of over 100 students from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties submitted applications to be judged on the basis of talent and merit by a distinguished panel of experts in their field.

    The 2015 winners of The Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships are: Theatre – David Friedman, 12th grade, Howard W. Blake High School; Literary Arts – Amy Malakoff, 11th grade, Howard W. Blake High School; Dance – Alexandra Desruisseaux, 12th grade, Wiregrass Ranch High School; Instrumental Music – Mark Trotter, 12th grade, Keswick Christian School; Vocal Music – Ginny Swanson, 11th grade, Shorecrest Preparatory School; Visual Arts – Indigo Naar, 11th grade, Gibbs High School.

    The 2015 panel of judges are: Theatre – Eugenie Bondurant, singer, television and film actor, with featured role as “Tigris” in the upcoming “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2”; Literary Arts – Lisa Unger, award-winning New York Times and internationally best-selling author; Dance – Brian Fidalgo; Artistic Director, choreographer/dancer for Moving Current Dance Collective; Instrumental Music – Richard Sparrow, Florida Orchestra member and University of Tampa music faculty; Vocal Music – Dawne Eubanks, classical soloist and voice instructor at Eckerd College and Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School; and Visual Arts – Michael Murphy, gallery owner of Michael Murphy Gallery M.

    Scholarship recipients will showcase their talent at The Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships Awards Program on May 7th at 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at TBBCA pARTner The Dali Museum, One Dali Boulevard, St. Petersburg.   • Distinguished Panel of Judges for 2015 TBBCA Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships

    Tampa, Fla. – (Mar 24, 2015) Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts (TBBCA) is pleased to announce its 2015 Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarship Program Distinguished Panel of Judges. For each category to which High School Juniors and Seniors from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties have applied, the judges who bring their unique expertise are: Eugenie Bondurant, Theatre; Richard Sparrow, Instrumental Music; Dawne Eubanks, Vocal Music; Brian Fidalgo, Dance; Michael Murphy, Visual Arts; and Lisa Unger, Literary Arts.

    TBBCA is excited to welcome back the award winning Ms. LISA UNGER to judge the competitive submissions for the Literary Arts scholarship.     Tampa, Fla. – (March 3, 2015) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) announced today that seven new Directors have been named to serve on the organization’s Board.

    Sharon Carlstedt Britton is an attorney with Phelps Dunbar, Tampa Office. She has practiced in the area of commercial litigation since 1992. She is a member of the Florida Bar and the American Bar Association, Section of Litigation, and has been admitted to the Bar in New York, and to the U.S. District Courts of Eastern District of New York, Middle District of Florida, Southern District of New York, and Northern and Southern Districts of Florida. Sharon is also a Resident Artist, Oleson Gallery and Bloom Art Center.

    Cindy Cockburn is President of C.C. Communications, a Public Relations and Special Events consulting firm based in St. Petersburg. Cindy has over 20 years of experience working with national and international media, both as a reporter and public relations professional. She is also a spokesperson, published author, columnist, freelance writer and speaker representative/booking agent.

    Enrique Crespo is Principal of Casa Nova Design Group, providing a full range of Interior Design services to an extensive portfolio of national and international clients. He was recently awarded the Aurora Design Award for excellence in Interior Design.

    William F. Everett Jr., AIA, is Founder and Principal of The Beaux-Arts Group, an architecturally integrated design, workspace and furnishing solutions firm, and contract furniture dealership that represents Knoll as exclusive dealer throughout West, Southwest and Central Florida, as well as 150 other manufacturers. The Beaux-Arts Group was awarded the 2013 Small Business of the Year Award from the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce.

    Tampa, Fla. – (Jan. 15, 2015) Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts (TBBCA) is pleased to announce its 2015 Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarship Program Call for Applicants. Each year, the TBBCA awards $15,000 in scholarships to Bay Area students based on artistic ability in the fields of instrumental music, vocal music, theatre, dance, visual arts and literary arts. High School Juniors and Seniors from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties are invited to apply.

    The 2015 Application and Guidelines are available for download at www.tbbca.org. Interested parties can also contact the TBBCA offices at 813-221-2787 to request a hard copy. Applications must be emailed, mailed or delivered to the TBBCA office by 3:00 p.m. on March 6, 2015. There is no fee to apply. Six students will be awarded $2,500 to be used for tuition at the college, university or professional arts training program of their choice.

    The TBBCA is proud to support young artists with The Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships. The scholarship program is named in honor of the TBBCA’s former Board President, Charlie Hounchell, who passed away unexpectedly in 2013. The scholarship program was developed and championed by Hounchell in 2007 and has since awarded $107,500 to Bay area students who wish to continue their educations and pursue careers in the arts.

    TBBCA will announce the 2015 winners in early April. The Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarship program is a unique funding resource and all qualified eligible students are encouraged to apply!

    Previous year’s 2014 Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships were awarded to: 1) Brittany White, a graduate of Howard W. Blake High School, won the scholarship for Dance. She is currently attending the University of South Florida. 2) Kaila DeLany, a graduate of Tarpon Springs High School, won the scholarship for Instrumental Music. She is currently attending Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. 3) Brooke Page, in her senior year at Seminole High School, won the scholarship for Literary Arts. Brooke is currently applying to colleges of her choice. 4) Cameron Kubly is a graduate of Howard W. Blake High School in Tampa. He won the scholarship for Theatre and plans to attend Oklahoma City University for Musical Theatre. 5) Alice Corinne Leavengood, a graduate of Shorecrest Preparatory School in Pinellas County, won the scholarship for Visual Arts. She currently attends New College of Florida. 6) Brandon Rodriguez, a graduate of Riverview High School, won the scholarship for Voice. He currently attends the University of Tampa.

  • Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts Announces 2014 Impact Award Finalists


     

    TAMPA, FL (October 9, 2014) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) announces the finalists for its annual Impact Awards, which will take place on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at The Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club in St. Petersburg. This year marks the 25th Anniversary for the TBBCA and will include a special tribute to the history of the organization and all its past presidents.

    The Impact Awards were created in 1989 to honor those leaders who have elevated Tampa Bay’s arts and cultural community through significant financial or in-kind contributions, volunteer service and/or innovative programming.  A total of nine recipients will be selected in three categories: Business, Individual and Nonprofit. Winners will be selected based on level of involvement or support of the arts, impact of contribution, originality, quality, and depth of service.

    This year’s event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a cocktail reception and silent auction, seated dinner and live entertainment by The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. Honorary chairs include Helen & Peter Wallace of St. Petersburg and Cynthia & Peter Zinober of Tampa. Event chair is Stephen Gay.  The evening will be hosted by emcee, Russell Rhodes, co-anchor of FOX13’s Good Day Tampa Bay.

    2014 Impact Award Finalists:

    Lifetime Achievement Award: In addition to its Impact Awards, the TBBCA will bestow St. Petersburg-based architect, Yann Weymouth with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Weymouth is best known for his design of St. Petersburg’s Salvador Dali Museum. He served as Chief of Design under I.M. Pei for the Grand Louvre Project in Paris, France and the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In addition, Mr. Weymouth has worked on the Hazel Hough Wing of the Museum of Fine Arts, the John and Mable Ringling Museum and Cultural Complex of Sarasota, The Patricia and Philip Frost Art Museum at the Florida International University in Miami, the Interdisciplinary Science Facility at the University of South Florida in Tampa, and The University of Miami’s Philip and Patricia Frost School of Experimental Music which is currently under construction and whose doors will open in early 2015.

    Featured Artist: Douglas “Firebug” Taylor, resident glass artist at The Morean Art Center’s Hot Shop will create this year’s awards. After graduating with a BA in Ceramic Engineering and Sculpture from the University of South Florida, he began working with Dean James Glass Works of Ybor City where he made production glass full-time for the American crafters market. At that time, Douglas developed new techniques from combining his many other art talents to create mixed media sculpture. He also learned advanced techniques from artists such as Fritz Driesbach, Tim Miller and Susan Gott.

(April 17, 2014) – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) has selected the high school recipients for its annual fine and performing arts scholarships and will host a reception for the winners at the Cox Media Group Performance Theatre in St. Petersburg on May 1st. The scholarship fund, previously named the High School Art Stars Scholarship, was renamed in 2013 to honor Charlie Hounchell, the program’s founder and champion until his sudden passing in February 2013. Since Charlie established the program in 2007, $107,500 has been awarded to Bay Area students who wish to pursue careers in the arts.

    Each year, the TBBCA awards six (6) scholarships in the amount of $2,500 for each of the following categories: dance, instrumental music, literary arts, theatre, visual arts and vocal music. This year, forty-eight (48) students from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties submitted applications and work samples to be reviewed by a selected judge for each art discipline.

    The 2014 winners of The Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarship include: (dance) Brittany White, 12th grade, Howard W. Blake High School, Hillsborough County; (instrumental music) Kaila DeLany, 12th grade, Tarpon Springs High School, Pinellas County; (literary arts) Brooke Page, 11th grade, Seminole High School; (theatre) Cameron Kubly, Howard W.     The 2014 panel of judges included: (dance) Erin Cardinal, director, choreographer/dancer for Moving Current Dance Collective; (instrumental music) Richard Sparrow, Florida Orchestra member and University of Tampa music faculty; (literary arts) Lisa Unger, award-winning New York Times and internationally best-selling crime author; (theatre) Anna Brennen, Founder of Stageworks Theatre; (visual arts) Michael Murphy, gallery owner of Michael Murphy Gallery M; and (vocal music) Dawne Eubanks, classical soloist and voice instructor at Eckerd College and Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School.

    Scholarship recipients will present their winning work at TBBCA’s reception on May 1st from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Cox Media in St. Petersburg (11300 4th Street North, Suite 300).   • TBBCA Chalks Up Sixth Annual Art Festival in Hyde Park Village March 14-16

    Tampa, FL – Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) will host its sixth annual Chalk Walk art festival March 14-16 at Hyde Park Village in Tampa.
